Dear Legislator,
I sincerely thank you for your ongoing support of New Mexico’s road construction and maintenance programs. Your leadership has been vital to improving safety, strengthening our economy, and connecting communities across our state.
However, last year’s limited funding left many critical projects unfunded and delayed essential maintenance. This setback has not only slowed progress—it has jeopardized thousands of New Mexico jobs and worsened our already poor road conditions. National reports consistently rank our roads among the worst in the country, and we now face an estimated $6.5 billion backlog in needed improvements.
I respectfully urge you to make a comprehensive road funding package a top priority in the upcoming legislative session.
This package should include:
A $1.5 billion highway bond bill, providing multi-year, predictable, and sustainable funding for major projects statewide.
A $500 million general fund special appropriation to restore maintenance funding and accelerate critical local and regional projects that can begin immediately.
This two-part package will allow the New Mexico Department of Transportation and local governments to maintain momentum, preserve jobs, leverage federal dollars, and ensure that our roadways are safe and reliable for residents, visitors, and commerce.
I urge you to support both the bond bill and the special appropriation in the upcoming session. These measures represent an investment in safety, economic growth, and the future of New Mexico.
Thank you for your leadership and for your continued commitment to building a stronger transportation network for our state.
Sincerely,
